A Simple 2-Day Ujjain Travel Itinerary
Two relaxed days in Ujjain: Mahakaleshwar darshan, Mahakal Lok, Ram Ghat aarti and the city's other well-loved temples, planned at a pace that works for families.

Two days is enough to see Ujjain's main temples without rushing. This plan keeps the busiest places for the morning, leaves time to rest in the afternoon heat, and saves the evenings for the ghats and Mahakal Lok, when the city is at its most beautiful.
Adjust it to your group. If you are travelling with elders or young children, it is fine to drop a stop or two.
Before you go
- Book Bhasma Aarti early if you want to attend. It needs advance booking through the official temple website.
- Check timings. Temple timings change with seasons and festivals. Confirm on the day.
- Arrange transport. A cab for the day makes Day 2 much easier, especially for families.
Day 1: Mahakaleshwar and the old city
Early morning (optional): Bhasma Aarti. If you have a booking, you will be up well before dawn. Rest for a couple of hours afterwards.
Morning: Mahakaleshwar darshan. Head to the temple after breakfast. Read our darshan guide for the queue options.
Late morning: Harsiddhi Temple. A short walk away. Combine it with a stroll through the lanes nearby.
Afternoon: rest. Ujjain afternoons can be hot for much of the year. Head back to your hotel, have lunch and rest.
Evening: Ram Ghat aarti and Mahakal Lok. Reach Ram Ghat before sunset for the evening aarti on the Shipra. Then walk through Shri Mahakal Lok after dark, when the sculptures are lit.
Day 2: Temples around the city
Morning: Kal Bhairav Temple. Start early to beat the queues at this ancient temple.
Late morning: Gadkalika and Bhartrihari Caves. Both are on the same side of the city as Kal Bhairav.
Lunch and rest.
Afternoon: Mangalnath Temple and Sandipani Ashram. Mangalnath sits on a quiet stretch of the river. Sandipani Ashram is close by and is a peaceful, green stop.
Evening: Chintaman Ganesh Temple. A calm place to end the trip, a little outside the busy centre.
Where to stay
Staying slightly outside the old city means quieter nights and easier parking, with temples a short drive away. Shivkunj is on the Indore–Ujjain Road, which also makes it convenient if you are arriving from or leaving for Indore airport.
