Sculptures at Shri Mahakal Lok silhouetted against the evening sky

Shri Mahakal Lok is the large, landscaped corridor developed around the Mahakaleshwar temple. It opened in 2022 and has quickly become one of the places visitors most want to see in Ujjain.

It is an easy, open walk, which makes it a good outing for the whole family.

What you will see

The corridor is lined with sculptures and murals that bring to life stories of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from the Puranas. Look out for:

  • Large sculptures of Shiva in different forms, set along the walkway and around water features.
  • Mural panels that tell well-known stories through a series of scenes.
  • Open spaces and gardens where you can pause and sit.

Information boards along the route explain many of the stories, so it is worth walking slowly.

Best time to visit

Evening is the favourite. As the light fades, the sculptures are lit and the heat of the day eases. Sunset into early evening is also the busiest time, so arrive a little early if you prefer fewer people.

Early mornings are quieter and cooler, and work well if you are combining the walk with Mahakaleshwar darshan.

Tips for a comfortable visit

  • Carry water, especially from April to June.
  • Plan for walking. Elders may want to rest at the seating areas along the way.
  • Keep children close around the water features and in evening crowds.
  • Combine nearby places. Mahakaleshwar is right next door, and Harsiddhi Temple and Ram Ghat are a short distance away.

Getting there

Mahakal Lok is in the old city next to Mahakaleshwar. Autos, e-rickshaws and app cabs can drop you nearby. On festival days, vehicles may be stopped further away.
